Children's Services

Children's services includes regular Early Literacy Classes for all ages, summer reading programs, 1000 Books before Kindergarten, and other reading programs. The creative Play area includes Legos, puppets, costumes, and more for fun interactive learning.

The Makerspace, which is now open all week during normal library hours, offers new and cutting edge technology to the community! Be creative with our sewing machine, Cricut , Learn how to digitize your negatives, and also learn about 3D printing with our printers. Watch for events coming up!

Storybook Park, in Decatur, is a great outdoor space that is used for a variety of Library Programs such as our Summer Concert Series. The space is also available for rental to the public, see an APLS staff member for more details.

Snakehead Ed

Ages 5 and up

Learn more about nature, reptiles, biomes and science through interactive, close encounters with exotic snakes.  Snakehead Ed specializes in education through excitement and shows each participant and viewer the beauty, power and importance of these amazing reptiles.  As a retired science teacher and snake enthusiast, Snakehead Ed creates an unforgettable experience designed to engage, thrill and educate kids ages 5 and up. Brave participants are all invited to hold, touch and view a variety of fascinating snakes as they learn about each creature's unique abilities, instincts, senses and characteristics.  Participants learn about each snake's habitat throughout the show, from the desert vipers of Africa to their own North American neighbors to the colossal jungle pythons of Asia.

Sign up is required by Noon on the Friday before each event date. 

Recommended for Ages 13+

Join us in the Makerspace and turn a small, terracotta pot, into a lively fairy garden! All who sign up will receive a small succulent, and two small decorations made with our 3D printer. Paint will be provided to decorate your pot and miniatures. Feel free to bring your own decorations and supplies for more fun!

Kids in the Kitchen cooking class series for children ages 7-12 teaches basic kitchen skills, food safety, and nutrition with a fun, hands-on approach.  Kids will prepare their own lunch each session.

Join us for Magic on Mondays!  All ages are welcome to join our newly formed M-Club.  Weekly meetings are scheduled for members to play, trade cards, and share ideas.  Instruction is available for new players and beginners, and loaner decks will be available for learning during the meeting.  Magic: The Gathering is a strategy trading card game, and can be played by two or more players, typically using a deck of 60 cards. http://magic.wizards.com/en.
